A heap of new LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight details have arrived

A brand-new LEGO Batman game is nearly upon us, with LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight scheduled to release quite soon on May 29th, 2026 (or even earlier if you fork out for the fancier edition!), and the folks at IGN have just dropped a bunch of new details on the game as part of their IGN Fan Fest 2026 coverage.

Here’s a rundown of what’s new and interesting:

Batman over the years

This take on LEGO Batman is a considerably ambitious one, attempting to weave moments and ideas from Batman history across all media into a single, chronological story that sees Batman, his friends and foes grow and change over many years. So while this is technically an original tale, it also means the team has been able to bring in iconic moments from all 87 years of Batman.

Probably the most exciting thing to come out of this new coverage of Legacy of the Dark Knight from IGN, then, is a first look at a cinematic that riffs on one such scene, from arguably the second-best Batman movie of all time (don’t ask me for my favourite, I don’t want arguments), Tim Burton’s Batman from 1989.

Here we see the moment where Joker and his goons take over and vandalise Gotham City’s Flugelheim Museum, with the LEGO version recreating it pretty closely – save for the more gruesome depiction of the museum patrons’ bodies in the film original. We even have the Prince song, “Partyman,” present and accounted for in the game, which signals how far the team is going to bring faithful moments from Batman history into this new story.

And here’s the same scene from Batman (1989):

Playable characters

One detail that the TT Games team addressed, which has no doubt puzzled some LEGO game fans since announcement, is the incredibly small roster of characters in comparison to other titles. Where LEGO games from this studio would typically include dozens if not hundreds of potential playable characters, Legacy of the Dark Knight features just sevenBatman, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Jim Gordon, Talia Al Ghul, and Catwoman.

That’s a pretty big change, but according to IGN’s conversation with the head of the development team, Jonathan Smith, it’s about giving each of these LEGO Batman characters a serious amount of individual depth in their journey and gameplay, rather than getting depth out of having a massive roster of slightly unique heroes.

“We’re taking these individual characters on a journey,” Smith told IGN. “So you are constantly upgrading and developing new skills and opening up new abilities for each of those characters. Within the Bat family, as well, we really wanted to focus on making those characters really unique, making their personalities come across and their abilities very distinct.”

The idea, then, is to make every available character feel distinct from the rest, and encourage players to try different combinations and develop their playstyle. And of course, there will still be tons to collect in-game with more than 100 different suits to add to your wardrobe.

Catwoman

And an exciting inclusion in that roster of seven, if not an absolutely essential one, is Catwoman. The TT Games team spilled some new details on Catwoman in Legacy of the Dark Knight, and it sounds like we’re getting a version of the character that not only takes all the best bits of every era of Batman but perhaps goes even beyond that.

Where Smith reveals to IGN that this game’s Catwoman and her part in the story (as well as her various outfits) pull from the likes of Zoe Kravtiz in The Batman, Michelle Pfeifer in Batman Returns, Julie Newmar in the 60s and more, but then features a skillset that we’ve not seen in any of those representations. The developer cites fun new tech, new whip moves and even the ability to summon cats that can back her up in combat or be directly controlled to enter tight spaces and open up new paths – I love that these are summoned with a laser pointer!
