After previously teasing the announcement, Bandai Namco has officially unveiled a brand-new RPG, Echoes of Aincrad, coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC on July 10th, 2026.
While not a Tales of… game like many had hoped, it’s instead a new title set in the Sword Art Online universe. But fear not, those who’ve yet to experience the manga, anime, videogames or any other way this series about folks being trapped in a life-or-death MMO takes form – this one looks like it’s gunning to be a standalone experience that attracts a new audience alongside existing fans.
For starters, rather than cast players as series mainstay, Kirito, like many of the other SAO games, this one allows you to create your own character and forge your own legend as you step into the world of Aincrad. The big “Echoes of Aincrad” logo with a tiny “Sword Art Online” underneath also seems to signal that Bamco wants more people to look at this one.
It’s also a big action-RPG with dangerous combat encounters and a sprawling, Unreal Engine-powered world to explore, and seems genuinely ambitious, so as someone who fell off of Sword Art pretty early I’m actually quite intrigued to see more.
