Mario Galaxy Movie Star Fox

Fox McCloud joins The Super Mario Galaxy Movie

Here’s one I didn’t expect – Nintendo just dropped a new poster for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, and it just so happens to feature a character that we not only didn’t know would be in the much-anticipated sequel but hails from a franchise far outside of the Mario-verse – Fox McCloud of Star Fox fame.

Like the rest of the cast, this is a new look for Fox to suit the overall aesthetic of the movie, and probably the most detailed we’ve ever seen the character.

Of course, we’ve had characters from non-mainline Mario titles already in the film franchise. Donkey Kong had a prominent role along with some of his kin in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, although he’s basically a de facto member of the crew. R.O.B. – technically more of a controller than a game character – appears in the new film, and like Fox we’ve mostly only seen him interact with Mario in the Super Smash Bros. games. So this does feel like some small indication that Nintendo and Illumination are building towards an “Everyone is here!” style cinematic future.

It does feel a little disappointing that this massive reveal has come suddenly via a poster reveal, and so soon before the movie arrives, rather than left to surprise audiences. But here we are!

There’s also no word yet on who’ll be voicing Fox McCloud, but whoever it is will be joining new additions to the Mario movie-verse cast such as Donald Glover as Yoshi, Luis Guzmán as Wart and Issa Rae as Honey Queen.

Update: Fox McCloud’s voice has been revealed, and it’s none other than Glen Powell (The Running Man, Top Gun: Maverick, Scream Queens). The actor made the announcement via an admittedly very fun Instagram post where he’s rocking the iconic Fox bomber jacket:

Check out the newposter in full below, where we see Fox standing heroically next to his iconic Arwing, with Yoshi’s Island‘s Ukiki (who we’ve already seen in trailers) gazing fondly up at him:
