PlayStation has just announced sweeping price changes to its core console hardware line-up, with increases set to affect the PS5, PS5 Digital Edition and PS5 Pro, as well as PlayStation Portal.
The new pricing will go into effect starting April 2, 2026 and will affect markets across the world including the US, UK, Europe, ANZ and Japan.
It’s a pretty substantial hike across the board, with something like the PS5 Pro now hitting an astronomical $899.99 USD – a jump of $150 USD.
Sony’s messaging on the PlayStation Blog post explaining the reason for these changes reads:
“With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally. We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”
It’s not the first time the PS5 has seen a price increase, but it’s not entirely surprising either given the shortages and subsequent rising costs associated with electronics components like RAM and storage, as well as the general global economic state in current times. Attention will no doubt turn now to competing hardware like Nintendo’s Switch 2, and whether or not we see similar action there.
