Final Fantasy Resonance finally brings the series to HD-2D

Announced during today’s Nintendo Direct showcase, Square Enix has revealed a “new” Final Fantasy RPG. Though it’s not the next mainline title, and it’s based the mobile entry, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, it is the series’ first foray into the publisher’s beloved HD-2D style. Titled Final Fantasy Resonance, it’s coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, Switch and PC on October 22, 2026.

Take a look at the announcement trailer below:

It may not be a HD-2D remake of Final Fantasy VI (a dream announcement for myself and many others), but this new-ish FF looks sick as hell, reimagining the setting and plot of Brave Exvius into something that bridges the game between the 16/32-bit era and the modern series. It expands Brave Exvius’ world into a freely explorable one, and the battle system seems to borrow a bit from the Octopath Traveler games. There’ll be plenty of music from BE, but also 33 brand-new tracks.

Plus, it’s also been revealed that characters from across Final Fantasy history will “resonate” from their worlds to this one, as “Visions” that can aid players in battles.
