Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen are coming to Nintendo Switch this week

Pokémon Day is nearly here on February 27, 2026, and to celebrate, The Pokémon Company and Nintendo have announced that both Pokémon FireRed and Pokémon LeafGreen will be coming to the Nintendo Switch eShop, at the conclusion of the Pokémon Presents broadcast on the same day!

This pair of titles was originally released on the Game Boy Advance back in 2004, as remakes of the original Pokémon Red and Pokémon Green for the Game Boy. Unlike other Game Boy Advance games for the Switch, these won’t form part of the Nintendo Switch Online library but will instead be available for purchase as standalone games at a price of USD $19.99 / AUD $30.00 / £16.99 each.

The Pokémon community has posited that this is probably due to the inclusion of support for wireless battling and trading as well as the possibility of Pokémon HOME integration in the future (this was seemingly initially confirmed by the product pages for the games but has since been removed), features that would have been compromised by the NSO emulators’ additional save and rewind functions.

This pair of remakes features updated visuals compared to the original Game Boy versions, as well as the added explorable areas of The Sevii Islands, making them pretty great versions to get into if you’re nostalgic for classic Pokémon but want something with a slight edge on the very first releases.

Here’s where you can pre-order these right now:

It’s also worth noting that, since the original Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen were single-language releases, the Nintendo Switch versions have also been re-released as individual SKUs for each language supported.

The special February 2026 Pokemon Presents is happening on Pokemon Day, and you can find out what it’s about, as well as where and when to watch it in different time zones in our post right here.
