LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is getting a free tie-in comic

Warner Bros. and LEGO have revealed that LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, the upcoming TT Games-developed video game celebrating Batman history across media, will be getting an official comic book tie-in. And the best part is, it’ll be completely free.

The comic will arrive as part of two celebrations – the first being Free Comic Book Day on Saturday, May 2, 2026. On that day, participating comic stores around the world will be giving out a wealth of free comics, and one of those will be this new LEGO Batman story, titled The LEGO Batman Returns. The comic will also be available via the DC Universe Infinite app on the same day, and similarly for free.

The other celebration happening is this week’s anniversary of Batman’s first ever appearance, in Detective Comics #27 on March 30, 1939. As such, this new, free comic will reference that very cover.

The LEGO Batman Returns is written by Ivan Cohen (Beware the Batman), with art by Paul Lee (Batman: Under the Hood), and according to the press release will “follow a day in the life of LEGO Batman as he returns to Gotham City after a hiatus and encounters a variety of familiar DC characters, paying homage to the Dark Knight’s history in media, with references to past films, television shows, and comic books, combined with signature LEGO humor.”

LEGO Batman fans have had a bit of good news lately, with this free comic reveal coming on the heels of a rare early release date change. The game was recently rescheduled to launch a full week ahead of its original release date, now landing on May 22, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC.

From the developer:

LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight is a brand-new open world action adventure video game that invites players to embark on Bruce Wayne’s epic journey to become the hero of Gotham City, inspired by decades of Batman films, television, comic books, and games, and jam-packed with Batman nostalgia, DC lore, and TT Games’ signature brand of fun-filled LEGO humor.”

The game is also coming to Nintendo Switch 2 at some point in 2026, but the release date for that version remains to be confirmed.
