Nintendo has blessed us with a stacked Nintendo Direct presentation dedicated entirely to celebrating the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda franchise, revealing a ton of updates on the Ocarina of Time remake, new special edition hardware, upcoming feature film as well as other fun 40th Anniversary tie-ins.
One small update, perhaps smaller than some fans were hoping from this Direct, was an update on the live-action film. During the showcase, Shigeru Miyamoto appeared to offer some hints as to what the movie might be about, but stopped short of revealing anything overly crucial – aside from the film’s official title of (drumroll…) The Legend of Zelda.
According to Miyamoto, there’s something to this very simple title, and a reason that there’s no subtitle or anything else to go along with it. He talks about the importance of the Triforce in the Zelda universe, and promises more updates to come at a later date. No new trailer, just the official logo which you can see above.
Nintendo announced earlier in the year that it had brought the release date of the live-action The Legend of Zelda film forward by a full week to premiere in cinemas on April 30, 2027 – although this did follow an initial delay from March to May 7, 2027.
The Legend of Zelda stars Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link and Bo Bragason as Zelda, along with the late Sam Neill in an undisclosed role alongside Australian actor Uli Latukefu (Alien: Covenant, MaXXXine) portraying series mainstay villain, Ganondorf, as well as Dichen Lachman (Neighbours, Severance) as Impa and Yvonne Strahovski (Chuck, The Handmaid’s Tale) in an undisclosed “queen” role.
First revealed back in 2023, the live-action The Legend of Zelda film is being created in partnership between Nintendo and Sony Pictures Entertainment, with Miyamoto and Avi Arad (Spider-Man, Blade) billed as producers and Wes Bal (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) directing.
