Go figure – Nintendo has just dropped a new piece of story DLC for a 16-year old game in Super Mario Galaxy 2. The game, which released as an enhanced port alongside Super Mario Galaxy late last year, has just received an update that – among some general fixes and adjustments – adds a whole new story to Rosalina’s in-game storybook.
To unlock this new story, players will need to have played enough that the Final Chapter is available in the storybook, and then clear any galaxy and earn a Power Star, as per the instructions in the patch notes below. Thankfully, you don’t have to earn a new Power Star, you can simply re-obtain one you’ve already cleared.
Super Mario Galaxy Ver. 1.4.0 patch notes (Released April 29, 2026)
General
- Several issues have been fixed and adjustments made to ensure a smoother gaming experience on both Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch.
- A new story has been added to the storybook. Once Final Chapter is available in the storybook, you can read the new story by clearing any galaxy and earning a Power Star.
Without spoiling anything, this new chapter doesn’t really jump off of or play into any revelations or theories surrounding the recently-released Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which makes the timing of this sudden drop a little curious, but nice to see regardless. It’s simply a nice little, added closer to the game’s existing storybook chapters.
If you’d like to see the epilogue chapter for yourself, I’ve included a video (sans the lovely music for fear of Nintendo’s plumbers lawyers) below:
Alongside this, the music track from the newest chapter has also been added to the Super Mario Galaxy 2 playlist in the Nintendo Music app, and the fifth wave of icon elements from Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 has been added to the Nintendo Switch Online.
