It’s been – by publisher Ubisoft’s own admission – the worst kept secret in gaming, a fact that’s continued to prove true even in these last few days and weeks, but it’s finally officially official. Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is launching on July 9, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, a full-on remake of the beloved series entry and a breath of fresh sea air from the modern, mainline titles.
Now that we’ve all seen it, it’s been put into greater focus just what Black Flag Resynced actually is. More than a mere remaster but mercifully not a retrofit into the Assassin’s Creed RPG mould, this is something of a “best case scenario version of the game” type deal, developed with reverence for the original and even in collaboration with original director, Jean Guesdon, who we learned was newly-appointed Head of Content for the franchise when Ubisoft first confirmed (see: confronted) the existence of this game.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced – What’s New
This remake encompasses a huge swathe of changes, including improvements to stealth and naval gameplay, bolstered by a ton of quality-of-life changes, upgraded presentation backed by modern features like ray-tracing, Dolby Atmos audio and a dedicated photo mode, and brand-new content including expanded storylines for fan-favourite characters, new sea shanties, pets and heaps more.
Combat in particular has seen an overhaul, but is still in keeping with Assassin’s Creed’s ‘classic’ style of action, which will be welcome news to those who malign the franchise’s move to level and gear-based combat in the RPG-adjacent entries. Returning Edward Kenway voice actor describes it in the presentation as having been “entirely reworked into an action-oriented experience” with faster and more fluid attacks and combos, players able to parry opponents to execute chain-able instant kills and use the environment, tools and their parkour skills to their advantage.

It certainly looks like a blend between the, admittedly aged, scuffles from the original Black Flag and the kind of stuff we expect in modern action games, like colour-coded flashes identifying the types of enemy attacks and your ability to weather them, a sort of rubbery-elastic bouncing between targets with flourish, and quick switching gear to respond in the moment.
We also see how the team of studios under the Ubisoft banner has salvaged those god-awful tailing missions, without outright removing them. This time around, failing to stealthily tail a target and being spotted won’t result in an instant fail but will instead simply engage you in combat. It’s much more in keeping with the way I’m sure a lot of us play the rest of an Assassin’s Creed game – go in quietly until you inevitably fuck it up and then go very loud.
Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Collector’s Edition
Ah, of course there’s one of these! But look, you really can’t go tooling around with this era of Assassin’s Creed and not churn out another extravagant bit of future landfill to capitalise on it. And I say that as someone who owned both variants of the Assassin’s Creed II Collector’s Edition.
Now, as for this new one, you’re once again getting a very swanky collectible statue, of course depicting Edward Kenway sitting on top of a chest of gold, in front of a ship’s helm and the Black Flag itself. The edition also comes with a faux pirate map and journal chronicling Kenway’s adventures, a brooch and fancy case – plus the digital Deluxe Edition of the game and some bonus digital content.
This will all set you back a tidy USD $199.99 / AUD $349.95 / €199.99 / £174.99

If that’s all a little rich for your blood, the standard edition of the game will retail for USD $59.99 / AUD $99.95 / €59.99 / £49.99.
We have the first looks at the covers of the retail physical standard edition for Australian players, and aside from revealing some nice-looking cover art we can also see another crucial detail. It looks as though, despite coming with an actual disc for the game, the physical console versions of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will require an internet connection and an extra download to play.
This is far from new for Ubisoft games, or the Assassin’s Creed series, so it’s not incredibly surprising but still important to know for anyone picking up a copy from their local store – you will not be able to install and start the game without at least one, mandatory content download over the internet.
